*SOLD* Cartier Santos Galbee 987901

€0.00
Sold Out

What to say? An amazing vintage dress watch for men and just one of the most known timepieces ever made: a stainless steel Cartier Santos Galbée with a white dial, a date window and Roman numerals.

As the case is a large model (29 mm by 41 mm), the watch is perfect for the average male wrist and as it comes on an elegant bracelet, it is also loved by lots of women worldwide.

The Santos’ case was first created in 1904 and was seemingly inspired by a square pocket watch Cartier had produced before, but the highly legible dial design telegraphs a shift to Art Deco style that would define the 1920s and 1930s, and continues to define Cartier’s design aesthetic to this day.

The case was conceived to be robust and the screws that secured the glass were apparently intended to recall the legs of the new Eiffel tower. Similarly, the blackened Roman numerals suggest the radial layout of Paris’ streets and wide boulevards.

In 1987, the Santos was completely revised, it was given a new name, and it got relaunched as the ‘Santos Galbée’. The case lost its boxy looks and became more curved and elegant around the lugs, fitting better on the wrist than the original Santos did before.

We were able to find and source this marvelous piece for a new client.
